Stars come out at Richmond All Metro Banquet

The Touchdown Club of Richmond named Virginia head football coach Mike London the recipient of the 2011 Bobby Ross Division I Coach of the Year Award last night at its annual All-Metro Football Banquet held in Richmond.

In 2011, London's second year at Virginia, he led UVa to an 8-5 record and an appearance in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The Cavaliers posted a 5-3 mark in the ACC's Coastal Division and came within one victory of playing in the ACC Championship game.

Bobby Ross presented the award to London. Ross attended Benedictine High School and also coached at Colonial Heights High School before going on to a successful career in the college and professional ranks, including a Super Bowl appearance while coaching the San Diego Chargers.

Also receiving special recognition from the Touchdown Club was Virginia Tech's Jim Cavanaugh. A long time recruiter in the Richmond area for the Hokies, Cavanaugh is now the Director of Recruiting and High School Relations for the Virginia Tech football program. In the past he has helped the Hokies land Richmond area standouts like Victor "Macho" Harris and Corey Marshall, just to name a couple.

Both London and Cavanaugh were able to witness a number of their prized commitments receive their All-Metro awards as well. Of interest to many Hokie fans in attendance was the ultimate destination of Clover Hill's Joel Caleb who was named All-Metro's first team defense. We caught the latest recruiting 'buzz' on Caleb, which you can read more about here .

London was obviously pleased to see one of the Cavalier commitments, Varina's Maurice Canady, pick up the All-Metro Offensive Player of the Year award. A two way standout for Coach Stu Brown's Blue Devils, Canady could have been named to the team at several positions. In fact he was named first team All-State by VirginiaPreps.com at defensive back. Although he started the season at wide receiver for Varina, after an early season injury to the Blue Devils quarterback he moved under center where he posted a stat line that included 812 yards passing with 13 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,005 yards and 14 scores.

Canady's teammate Tyrell Chavis, also a Virginia commitment was named first team All-Metro on defensive. Also a VirginiaPreps.com all-state pick, Chavis starred on both sides of the ball for the Blue Devils and has 14 sacks as a defensive lineman. VirginiaPreps.com's Senior Football Editor Rod Johnson said of Chavis "Of all the players from the Class of 2012, the one who might eventually be remembered as the best is Varina's Tyrell Chavis as he has Sunday-level prospect written all over him. Quick off the ball with nearly unmatched strength, the Blue Devils standout is a match-up nightmare in the trenches. Most coaches in the Richmond area believe him to be the best line of scrimmage player on both sides of the ball in the region and his best football days are still ahead of him."
